Abi, 27 days

Just realised its actually been nearly 27 days since Abi’s operation.  I at least owe it to this site to give more details as I search other blogs for info.

Pre the amputation the x-rays showed no mets. We were asked if we wanted to take her to another vet for a CT scan but decided not to as we would have the amputation anyway.  She had her amputation on Wednesday 16th April. The next day she had a serious bleed and the vets were worried (as were we). However, on the Monday we had her home. She needed hand feeding but seemed easier to feed than our previous dog who had had an amputation (Mitch). However, she seemed to be great at finding and spitting out tramadol from her food. She was on metacam, antibiotics and tramadol.

We were worried as her good legs swelled up. After a few days the swelling went down.

The amputation site took a bit longer to heal than it should have done and as she wasn’t licking it the vet said to leave the staples in longer than normal.

Took her off tramadol as it seemed to cause panting and restlessness.

By Tuesday (just under 3 weeks post op) we were really pleased with her. She even tried to play with our other dog Jack, she was getting up to eat and pee and even going for very short walks.

Wednesday my husband went to New York for a conference and Abi misses him. She was a bit subdued but still walking ok.

Thursday gone- the blood curdling yelps when trying to get up. This is my most recent concern. Took her in Friday for stitches to be removed. Vet checked her over and couldn’t find a reason for the yelps. I asked for gabapentin. Which she is on now.

Today still yelping but not quite as blood curdling. She went outside into the garden for a pee (after yelps) and when I went to see why she hadn’t come in she was sitting on the lawn shaking. Got her back in. Once settled back on her bed she was perfectly calm, breathing steady, etc. and was hand fed food and water.

Please let the yelps go and Abi be happy playing again.

Due chemo next week.

I shall try and post even if the news is bad.
