RIP dear sweet Abi

Abi was put to sleep yesterday at home. Her cancer came back and went to her lungs. It was first noticed a couple of weeks ago. She got worse and worse. In the end she wasn’t eating and had poor quality of life. Vet had put her on codeine to reduce coughing. Want to say that although she didn’t have long, we don’t regret her amputation etc. We had a few months of watching her joy at life. Take care all and hug your dogs. Thank you for your support.

  4. Thank you all for your support, not just now but over the last few months. Now I feel a bit more able I’ll describe what happened in case it’s of use to anyone. Abi had been doing really well, racing around, full of life and joy. Then about 3 weeks before her death she had a fall. It was at night in the garden and we didn’t see what happened. We assume she missed her footing on the step. She came in very shaken but no signs of injury. The next day seemed fine but subdued. In the following week we noticed a cough develop. I took her to the vets thinking it might be associated with the fall. X-rays showed lots of nodules on her lungs. The vet gave her around 2 weeks. She was given codeine to stop the cough. This worked. She gradually went down hill- slower and slower, too tired for walks- though she always struggled to her feet and showed interest. Then when she stopped eating we decided enough was enough. We didn’t find it easy to decide when. People had told us Abi would tell us. I don’t think she would. But we decided she had no quality of life. We were lucky in that our vet agreed to come to the house.
